Disney BACKS OUT of a Train from Orlando Airport to Disney Springs

Jan 7, 2023

Since 2018, plans have been underway for a highspeed train that would run between Orlando Airport and Disney World. However , it appears that those plans won't come to fruition.

After much debate about the route, it was decided that the Brightline would use the tracks currently used by the SunRail Commuter System. would then take the train from the airport to the Orange County Convention Center and then to Disney World. A station was planned to be built close to -- but not on -- Disney World property.

This is a very different route to the original. It bypassed the tourist corridor, and instead took a direct route (near State Road 417) towards Disney World.

The Orlando Sentinel was informed by a Disney spokesperson that no longer belongs to the Walt Disney Company.

"As many people who are involved in this project are aware, the new route configuration does not support a Disney Springs station and as a result, we don't anticipate being part of this project," said Disney spokesperson Avery Maehrer.

The plan was so appealing to Disney World's frequent flyers that they even ended their free Magical Express airport transfer service.

By all accounts, Disney had been heavily involved in the initial planning for the train route, but the change to the route in early May takes it past the site of a new Universal theme park currently under construction -- Epic Universe -- as well as by other hotels and tourist attractions on International Drive.

This new route was supported both by local officials and Universal Orlando. Universal offered land along with $125 million through other partners.

Universal and International Drive partners have also committed $13,000,000 annually in ticket sales to this station and $2,000,000 annually for maintenance. Universal owns the land where the station will be built.

Brightline is currently finishing tracks connecting its South Florida service area to Orlando. Work on the route through Orlando is expected to start after 2023.
